To show students that maths isn’t scary… it’s fun, surprising, and full of “aha!” moments — all in a relaxed, nurturing space where they can be themselves.
To spark learning using hands-on materials, engaging activities, interactive games, and rich tasks that get brains buzzing (in a good way!).
To help every learner grow at their own pace, feeling supported every step of the way — knowing their needs come first and that they’re always capable of more than they think.
At Aspiring Maths Tutoring I offer:
An experienced New Zealand-trained teacher with recent classroom expertise, confident working with students of all ages.
I teach one-on-one, with no computers as the main teaching tool — just real conversation, hands-on learning, and clear explanations.
I provide enrichment for students who need extra challenge beyond school, helping them stretch their thinking and curiosity.
I support all learners — from those with specific learning needs to those who thrive with enrichment and extension.
I offer NCEA support right when students need it most — lessons are available any time of the year.
I teach Maths, Stats, and Calculus from Preschool to Year 13, plus Sciences for Year 12–13.
I also work with Homeschool families, students with Regional Health Schools, and Winter Snow Sport students who need flexible, personalised learning.
Hi, I'M FIONA
Fiona Shepherd MA (Dist), PG DipArts (Dist), BSc, Dip Tchng
I’m a NZ-qualified maths and stats teacher with 30+ years of experience — which basically means I’ve taught thousands of teenagers, decoded countless algebraic mysteries, and still genuinely love this subject. I’m also an accredited PLD facilitator, supporting teachers across Aotearoa.
My Master’s thesis, “Mathematics as a Secondary Subject: The Girls’ View,” explored how girls experience secondary maths. That research completely reshaped how I teach — making maths fun, creative, collaborative, confidence-building, and something students actually enjoy turning up for.
My mission? To break down any barriers that stop young people from feeling capable, empowered, and successful in mathematics. Everyone can do maths — and I’m here to help make it click

Tutoring Options
I offer 45 minute sessions for individual students, 1 hour sessions for small groups and sessions via zoom for Year 10+ students.
1 Student - $120 plus GST
Groups are maximum of 4 (4 students have two tutors) Placement is based on school year & maths level.
Please book a meeting or individual session first for assessment of level.
Year 11+ groups must all be doing the same school course.
1 hour Session 2-4 in group - $85/per student plus GST
1 Student - $120 plus GST
(Students Year 10+ only, we use Pencil Spaces. Younger students please enquire for pricing)
